Here’s my story.
My twin brother and I were raised in a large Mexican-American Catholic family in San Diego, and as a child I was expected to attend mass every week whether it was in English or Spanish.
In high school I remember reading a book by an apologist, and in the quiet of my living room abandoning my life to Jesus.
Early on, I had friends tell me I should be a youth minister because they thought I had a gift for teaching. My girlfriend at the time (who would later become my wife) told me the church she worked at was looking for a youth director. I had never worked with youth, but I figured if I was hired, it must mean that God wants me to do this.
I applied for the position at St. Peter’s by the Sea Lutheran Church, having no idea what it meant to be a Lutheran. During my interview the pastor said, “If you can mix the Catholic faith you grew up in with your new found evangelical faith, then you will do well in the Lutheran church.” I took the job. In that first ministry, I learned about and fell in love with the Lutheran Confessions, the historic Christian faith, and the liturgy.
My wife and I have been married since 2000 and have 3 children. I graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Religious Studies in 2005, from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena with a Masters of Divinity in 2011, and from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary with a Certificate of Advanced Theological Education in 2013.
I am passionate about leading worship. I am devoted to many of the ancient spiritual disciplines of the faith and enjoy helping people find their own ways of connecting to God. I’m also committed to evangelism and interested in helping others share their faith in Jesus. I enjoy talking with everyone and helping them see God at work in their lives.
I also enjoy Brazilian jiu jitsu.
